Do You Have A Backup Plan?

Data backup is hardly a part of a home computer user’s or business IT administrator’s plans, we all say it will never happen to me or my company, but in reality we are just mentally preparing for the time we lose our data.

There are different ways to backup your data including, “On-Premises Backup” and “Remote Backup.”

On-Premises Backup
An On-Premises backup is easily enough completed by copying your data to an external hard-drive or shared drive either in defined intervals or manually. The value of backing up this way means you can access your back-ups easily. This of course has its risks such as your information is vulnerable to loss, theft or destroyed in a freak-sewerage explosion accident.

Remote Backup
In a remote backup situation, your data is automatically sent to a remote center at defined intervals. You will only be required to install and setup the backup software on your computers, which then can then be assigned a backup schedule. A perfect example of an organization that can benefit from remote backups would be Non-Profit’s. Important information including, financial data, donation lists and other documents can be assigned a backup schedule easily without any expertise or special hardware. Your managed service provider, such as BluZEBRA Technologies, can do all this for you very easily.

Some issues with remote backups include slowed upload speeds, usually when an ISP intentionally slows down your bandwidth speeds, known as Bandwidth Throttling. Some ISP’s recognize a pattern of backup schedules and allow increased speeds while backing up data. One other risk could be who you have chosen to store your data with, so make sure you choose a credible source before uploading your critical information to an unknown storage provider.

A good example of a backup strategy is the 3-2-1 Strategy. This includes:

2 Local Backups
Make sure you have your data backed up in 3 separate locations. You could choose 2 local backup locations such as different external hard drives, kept in two different places within your business, so if theft does occur, the chances of both being stolen are slim.

1 Offsite Backup
Store a copy of your data offsite in case of theft, loss or destruction of your onsite backups.

So let’s be honest, ask yourself this, does your business have a backup plan in place?
What would happen if you lost all your data?
